IELTS Reading Band Scores: Complete Calculation Guide
The IELTS Reading test checks how well you understand written English using multiple question types. The section has 40 questions based on three passages, and it evaluates comprehension, vocabulary, and your ability to locate and interpret information.
To score well, you should understand how your raw score (the number of correct answers) is converted into the final band score for Academic and General Training Reading.
How IELTS Reading Band Scores Are Calculated
You get 1 mark for each correct answer in Reading. There are no negative marks, so it’s best to attempt every question.
Your total correct answers become your raw score, which is then converted into an IELTS Reading band score (from Band 1 to Band 9). Academic and General Training Reading both have 40 questions, but the text difficulty differs—so the raw-to-band conversion differs too.
